We stayed at that spot for near half an hour. Neither patrol nor relief detail showed themselves that entire stretch of time. I took a deep breath and whispered, “Let’s get on with it.”

“Bow shot?” the stookie angel asked, his little gold beetle bow ready to fire.

“Might give them time to sound the alarm,” Metra said, leaning around me to take a closer look at the guards again. “I’ve a better idea.”

Her next words were the language of our people, passed down from arch-druid to apprentice for a hundred generations. A shimmer appeared to the guards’ right, materializing into a full half-man, half-beast figure. While there was a resemblance to the Minotaur with the hairy legs and horns, the horns on this beast were curled like a ram’s and his lower half had more in common with a goat than a bull.

Is that...? I thought before the creature confirmed me guess by barking out something in the First Tongue.

Whatever was said made the guards pull out guns from under their coats and shoot at him. He took off down the street, making the guards give chase. “Cernunnos?” I muttered to Metra as we ran.

“He’s on the Kingdom’s kill-on-sight list,” Metra explained, the door to the building getting closer by the second. “Ever since AE kicked him out of here, it’s been no secret that he wants to get back in.”

By then, we’d made it to the front door, a plain wooden number the man-bull could have turned into toothpicks with a running head-butt. Lily put herself ahead of us as she opened the door, putting her blade through the crack. The hollow crack of guns echoed down the street, still not far enough away for me to feel safe. I was about to tell Besom to hurry up, when she slid through the door. I was right behind, stepping into the beat-up lobby area beyond. The walls, floor and desk were made of the same shabby material as the door. Thankfully, no one was at the desk, which gave us a moment to slide into the building. The shots got muffled once we’d shut the door behind us.

Taking note of the closed entrances on our left and right, Metra bent down to pull out her knife again. “Unless we want some unwelcome company, we’d best wedge these doors.”

The stookie angel looked around in confusion. “I don’t see no doorstops, yo.”

She stood tall and started carving chunks out of the walls. “Which is why I’m making some, little angel.”

Meanwhile, Lily was back to looking between her phone and the desk. The Minotaur braced the door on the right side of the room with his bulk. I liked the idea well enough to do the same with the left one. Mantis did its part by changing back to bug form and jamming itself under the front door we’d just come from.

The angel knelt down and told it, “You know I ain’t leaving you, right?”

The little gold bug gave him an annoyed grunt while Metra handed the stookie angel the first of her wedges.
